Ross Video Carbonite

Ross Carbonite Tally — Extending It Over the Internet

Ross Carbonite has robust built-in tally for studio floor operations. What it doesn't cover: remote guests on Zoom, multi-site campuses, and crew off the local network. Cue Light fills that gap — free, works over the internet, any phone as display.

What Ross Carbonite tally covers

Ross Carbonite switchers support the TSL UMD tally protocol as well as Ross Video's own tally system. This gives camera operators on the studio floor real-time tally via dedicated hardware connected to the local network. For broadcast studio environments where everything is hardwired and on-network, this works well.

Where it falls short

🌐

Remote guests on Zoom

TSL and hardware tally are LAN-only. A remote speaker on Zoom has no way to receive a tally signal from Ross Carbonite.

🏛️

Multi-site broadcast

Remote campus or overflow location not on the studio network. Hardware tally can't reach them.

📱

Mobile crew

Floor managers, producers, and talent waiting off-network who need situational awareness.

🎤

Greenroom talent

Waiting talent who need to know when they're on deck — cabling to the greenroom isn't always practical.

Cue Light doesn't replace Ross Carbonite's built-in tally — it extends it. Camera operators on the studio floor use hardware tally. Remote guests and off-network crew use Cue Light.

Using both together

The common production setup on Carbonite: existing hardware tally handles the studio floor automatically via TSL protocol. Cue Light runs alongside for everything else — the TD has one extra browser tab open and taps it when signalling remote participants.
